Furnished with cushions, it is great for chilling out with a book or taking an afternoon nap. A small, 2-storey, rectangular, wooden gazebo, charmingly fashioned in the form of a traditional rice barn – known as a ‘lumbung’ or ‘jineng’ – with a thatched, horseshoe-shaped roof, rests in another part of the garden. It features a lower platform and a staircase leading up to a private, upper room accessed by a Lombok door. This is a fun playhouse for children.

The beautiful villa known as ‘Legenda’ is situated in the rice fields just steps from the Indian Ocean at Berawa Beach on Bali’s southwest coast. Completed in September 2006, the villa offers a captivating blend of luxury, privacy and exemplary service. This perfect location is close to every amenity guests might need, yet it presents a fascinating insight into the life of rural Bali. The culture of rice is one of Bali’s most ancient traditions. Legenda, surrounded on two sides by rice paddies, is in the center of that tradition. There are also glimpses of the Indian Ocean and on clear days, there is a spectacular view of Bali’s majestic mountains. In 10 minutes guests can be in the center of busy Seminyak. This area presents an exciting nightlife, trendy boutiques, luxurious spas, and internationally acclaimed restaurants and clubs. The villa is 30 minutes from Denpasar International Airport. Easily accessible sporting amenities include world-class surfing at the Berawa Beach surf break; and golfing at Nirwana Bali Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman and voted the number one golf course in Indonesia. For horse lovers, the Umalas Equestrian Center is just a few kilometers away. Surf board and golf club rentals can be arranged.

Living Room

Welcoming guests with its generous size and openness, the Living Room offers a sweeping vista of the pool, gardens and adjacent rice fields. Cooled by ceiling fans and natural ventilation, and characterized by an Indian slate floor and a soaring vaulted ceiling, the room is exquisitely furnished with cream leather sofas, chairs and bar stools. The centerpiece is an impressive iron chandelier designed by the owners. There is a polished granite party bar with fridge and sink, and a round table with chairs for intimate dining.

A timber bridge traverses a pond between the Dining Room and the immaculate Service Kitchen. It is fully equipped with everything that the chef needs to prepare delicious meals in accordance with the requests of each guest. A Wet Kitchen and a Laundry are both tucked away at the back, along with the staff entrance.

Media Room

The air-conditioned Media Room is equipped with a 32-inch LCD flat screen TV, VCD player and surround sound system. It is entered via folding doors leading from the Dining Room. This comfortable room is furnished with two deeply-cushioned sofas, traditional batik cushions, a games table with Plexiglas chairs, and an innovative glass topped coffee table created by hand from coffee-wood branches. Sliding windows on one side overlook an ornamental pond and a window on the other side looks out at the pool. Books and artifacts fill the bookcases.

Master Suite

The Master Suite is accessed by an elevated covered walkway on the Living Room level, bridging a water garden below. A sliding door opens to reveal the air-conditioned Office/Sitting Room, complete with merbau wood floor, antique desk, chairs and original artwork on the walls.

The Master Bedroom is entered via another sliding door, where a splendid king-size, canopied bed, dressed in white linens and mosquito netting sits in the center of the room like a throne. It features intricate carving and is a copy of an old Madurese Royal bed. This air-conditioned room is equipped with a TV and VCD player. The walls are decorated in a cool shade of blue. There is a vaulted wood ceiling and folding glass doors that open onto a wide wrap around slate-floored balcony. This allows guests to choose open air sleeping instead of air-conditioning if they wish.

The views from this room and balcony are breathtaking. The balcony is furnished with a cushioned day bed, rattan armchairs and a dining table for a private breakfast or lunch. This is also a wonderful spot for sunset cocktails. The ensuite air-conditioned bathroom is luxurious. It boasts a cream-colored marble floor, an abundance of wall mirrors, an oval-shaped terrazzo bathtub for two and twin marble washbasins. A toilet cubicle and a separate shower are each entered via frosted glass doors. The powerful overhead rain-shower is complemented by a hand-held shower.

There is a large closet and dressing area with built-in wardrobes, drawers and plenty of storage space. A safe deposit box and mini-bar fridge are located in the dressing area.

Guest Suite

The air-conditioned Guest Suite is located on the Ground level. The Sitting Room/Children’s Bedroom is entered through a sliding door leading off a covered walkway beside a beautiful water garden. There is an L-shaped sofa that can be converted into twin beds, making this suite ideal for a family.

The bedroom is entered through a sliding wooden door which separates it from the sitting room, or through doors opening onto the Terrace and Garden. This generous bedroom is furnished with antiques and artwork, an Oriental rug and a king-size, four-poster steel bed. The bed has elaborate white mosquito netting which allows guests to sleep with the folding glass doors open to the rice field views, or to choose the option of air-conditioning.

The Guest Suite is equipped with a safe deposit box and a mini-bar fridge. A beautiful old cabinet holds a TV and VCD player. The dressing area and ensuite bathroom follow the same layout and have the same amenities as the Master Suite. The wide wrap around white Palimanan stone terrace is furnished with an antique carved Timorese table and chairs for private dining, or just relaxing and viewing the rice fields.

Guest House

The free standing Guest House is located on the far side of the living and dining pavilion on ground level. It can be reached from the Dining Room or by an outdoor staircase which leads from the Living Room. It is air-conditioned and features a soaring ceiling and a Merbau wood floor. The furnishings include a queen size, four-poster bed fashioned from carved teak, with exquisite white linens and mosquito netting; an antique cabinet housing a TV and VCD player with surround sound; a writing table and chairs.

The air-conditioned bathroom has a marble floor and a dressing area with fitted wardrobes, huge mirrors, and louvered doors which hide a safe deposit box and mini bar fridge. Double marble topped vanity units support large glass washbowls with teak cupboards and shelves underneath. The toilet cubicle and separate shower are each located behind frosted glass doors. The powerful rain-shower is complemented by a hand held shower. Glass doors lead to an open air bathroom romantically lit by unique wall lamps. An oversize bathtub is sheltered under the roof eaves, and there is an outdoor rain-shower for moonlit bathing.

A glass wall of sliding doors opens onto a white Palimanan stone terrace. There is a marble topped iron table and chairs for private dining with garden and pool views. The terrace is sheltered by a pergola supporting a cascade of white thumbergia flowers.

Gardens, Swimming Pool, and Relaxation Pavilion

The 16 x 3 meter, blue slate tiled swimming pool has a waterfall at one end, two infinity edges, and is anchored by a Pendopo, used as a Relaxation Pavilion. This ancient structure is the core of a 150-year old wooden Joglo house from Java. It showcases ornate hand-carvings and robust columns, and was constructed using traditional tongue and groove techniques without the use of any nails or bolts. Furnished with a rustic table, a deeply cushioned rattan sofa and chairs, this raised pavilion, with its antique terracotta tiled floor is another delightful area for dining, entertaining and relaxing. There is a granite topped bar for serving at the back of the structure.

The white Palimanan stone pool terrace is shaded by sweet-scented white frangipani trees; there are 4 sunbeds and two umbrellas.

The expansive gardens are dotted with palm trees and white-flowering shrubs and trees. Open to the rice fields on one side with a view unbroken by walls or fences, the property expands its borders.

Water is a predominant element in the spiritual landscape of Bali. This is reflected throughout the property, but especially in the enchanting water garden between the bedroom pavilion and the Living/Dining pavilion. The pond features white lotus and bulrushes, and is planted with white orchids and a frangipani tree on an island. Two serene Buddha statues sit in stone caves against a backdrop of flowing water to complete this beautiful water feature.

Services

Legenda is supported by a carefully selected team of highly trained and experienced staff members who will ensure that its guests experience a truly enjoyable stay in Bali. The team includes an in-house chef, a head houseman, housekeepers, a full time gardener and three security guards. The chef is trained in the preparation of both local and international cuisine, and is responsible for the market shopping.

Nannies, baby-sitting services, spa and massage services, the use of a car and driver, tour guides and any additional staff are available on request. An extra charge will apply. A baby’s cot and high chair can be supplied.

Villa Asta is a peaceful, luxurious, 5-bedroom residence designed with the flexibility to accommodate groups of up to 10 guests. With its sophisticated ambiance, it is ideally suited for discerning groups of friends or families who want to experience the very best of Bali. The Villa is nestled in the heart of the Batubelig area, less than 10 minutes walk to the beach on Bali’s south-western coast, and just a few minutes’ drive from the trendy Seminyak area, with its glamorous lifestyle and wide choice of top, internationally-acclaimed restaurants. Bordered by rice fields, the setting is serene and beautiful, within a neighborhood that is home to some of the most prestigious properties on the island. On a clear day, the vista is blessed with the magical sight of the mountains. The nearby beaches are renowned for their world-class surf breaks and panoramic coastline views. Batubelig Beach is quiet and peaceful, while Seminyak Beach is the playground of the rich and famous; the spot where the local and expatriate communities gather every evening to enjoy Bali’s legendary sunsets. Seminyak boasts a plethora of chic cocktail bars, exciting nightclubs, sumptuous spas, fashionable boutiques and famous restaurants including ‘Ku Dé Ta’, ‘Kafé Warisan’, ‘Living Room’, ‘Hu’u’ and ‘La Lucciola’.

Villa Asta is located 25 minutes from the international airport, and is also convenient for all of the main shopping malls, Waterbom Park, and tourist attractions such as the dramatic and venerated Tanah Lot sea temple, perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock at the edge of the foaming white surf of the Indian Ocean.

Rooms

Villa Asta was designed by the internationally-acclaimed architect, Guy Morgan, with sumptuous interiors and landscaping by Dean Kempnich. The property is entered through an ornately framed wooden doorway, behind which stands a Balinese Hindu feature known as the ‘aling aling’ – a short screen wall devised to protect the property from troublesome and malign influences, because evil spirits have great difficulty in turning corners!

A waterfall cascades into the pool producing a “glass like” view across the pool to the feature bale. This also has the effect of producing gasps of surprise and delight from the guests as they step past the wall and view the property for the first time. Boasting contemporary minimalist architecture and a tropical open-living concept with Balinese influences, Villa Asta is comprised of 4 separate living, dining and sleeping pavilions. The warm teak wood floors, richly grained coconut wood pillars, creamy white Palimanan stone terraces, cool marble fixtures, slate floors, and random rock walls form the dominant components, juxtaposed against koi (fish) ponds, water spouts and the natural greenery of Bali’s exotic plants.

The open-sided dining pavilion is furnished with a long table which seats up to 18, boasting padded chairs and an orange theme. Cooled by natural breezes it also features a teak wood floor, paddle fans and pendulous lanterns suspended from its pitched roof. Ideal for entertaining, this ample pavilion is linked to a quality music system with surround speakers in the roof.

Adjacent to the dining pavilion is a fully equipped, open-air service kitchen, characterized by a slate floor, teak cupboards, and black marble work surfaces. Here, the chef will prepare delicious breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and refreshments, in accordance with guest requirements. The marble bar, complete with bar stools, is a great place for enjoying a casual breakfast or socializing with friends.

Sliding opaque glass doors lead from the dining area into an air-conditioned den. This cosy snug is furnished with deeply cushioned lounges and a big lazy chair. It also doubles as an office, and is equipped with a built-in desk and fitted cupboards, a computer with Internet access, a printer, a 32-inch plasma TV with over 25 satellite channels, DVD and a high quality sound system linked to speakers in the living and dining areas. The walls are graced with colorful local artwork and artifacts.

The living pavilion is open on 4 sides and features a soaring ‘alang alang’ thatched roof supported by coconut wood pillars above a cream Palimanan stone floor. Ceiling fans and gentle breezes keep this area cool; it is tastefully furnished with a cushioned rattan sofa, chairs, and a glass topped rattan table. This pavilion is also linked to the central music system with surround speakers in the roof.

More surprises are in store for guests as they make their way across the water garden, where large stepping stones lead over a pond to a timber walkway that forms a bridge over a secluded, large plunge pool separated from the dining and living areas by a low wall. This is the sleeping pavilion, a single-storey building housing 2 air-conditioned double bedrooms, complete with en-suite bathrooms, and a pool terrace. Each bedroom boasts a marble floor and a soaring thatched roof, and each is furnished with a canopied 4-poster king-size bed, a comfortable built-in window seat, an ottoman at the end of the bed, and a 29-inch plasma TV. Each is tastefully decorated with bold colours, rich fabrics and bright scatter cushions, local artwork and artefacts. Each also features a dressing room, complete with a vanity mirror, a safe deposit box, and built-in shelves and hanging space. Sliding glass doors lead into the private garden bathrooms, each one dominated by a splendid, oversized, marble bathtub as its central feature, and sheltered from the elements by the eaves of the roof. There is also a rainshower in each bathroom, together with a discreetly positioned toilet, and a white porcelain washbasin atop a marble vanity unit. These garden bathrooms are surrounded by walls for absolute privacy, and are both neatly planted with palms, ferns and irises. The plunge pool can be accessed by exterior bathrooms doors, thus avoiding the need to walk through the bedrooms.

Three further bedrooms and the games room are located at the far end of the garden, away from the main living areas. This 2-storey pavilion houses 3 twin bedrooms downstairs. Each of these air-conditioned bedrooms can accommodate one couple or 2 children on twin beds, plus 2 more children on rollaway beds. Each bedroom is accessed by sliding glass doors from a colonnaded terrace, and each boasts a walk-in wardrobe, an en-suite garden bathroom with toilet, shower, washbowl atop a vanity unit, and a traditional ‘mandi’ – an outdoor urn fed by a waterspout.

The semi open-air games room is a huge wooden deck with a thatched roof. It is cooled by ceiling fans, accessed by an external staircase, and presents beautiful rice field views. The play area is complemented by a kitchenette complete with a fridge and cooking facilities, and a shower room with washbasin and toilet. Equipment includes a music system, a computer (with internet access), DVD, pool table, a ping pong table, and a 42-inch wall-mounted plasma TV housed behind sliding doors within a built-in wooden cabinet. The room is furnished with an abundance of chairs and a large daybed.

Facilities

The immaculate garden is dominated by a dramatic freeform swimming pool, lined with a patterned mosaic of cobalt blue and sage green tiles. Shallow layers within the pool stair-step down into the deepest 4-metre section that has the pool at a refreshing temperature even in the hottest weather. Adjacent to the pool sits and elegant 3-metre-high, 2-storey ‘bale’ relaxation pavilion. Shaded by a thatched roof, this elevated, double-decker pavilion offers spectacular rice field and mountain views. This is the perfect place for champagne and cocktails at sunset.

Stunningly landscaped around the pool, the soft green lawn is traversed by slate ‘crazy-paving’ pathways, and dotted with sweet scented frangipani, velvety red flowering ‘dadap merah’ trees, pots of bougainvillea, and a bed of gladioli. Soothing ripples originate from a water court, tiny islands support shrubs and lanterns, smooth Palimanan stone is fashioned into a square sun terrace and is furnished with a large canopied chair. A circular timber deck rests beside the pool, complete with sunloungers and umbrellas. Every need has been considered with the provision of an outdoor pool shower, a garden shower and washroom and a hidden wash room accessed by a gorgeous, red and gold, hand-carved Balinese door.

At the far end of the garden is a walled, grass court, suitable for playing badminton, volley ball, football and other games. There is a private parking area at the front of the property outside the main entrance doors.

Guests at Villa Asta will be eligible for complimentary membership of The Canggu Club for the duration of their stay.
