Dining Pavilion

The dining pavilion is furnished with a sleek black lacquered dining table for eight, positioned within an open air pavilion sheltered by a roof with a wooden ceiling and pendulous paddle fans. The pavilion features a bar and service area, offering a delightful alfresco dining experience.

Sunken Lounge

The open-air sunken lounge is located adjacent to the dining pavilion, and is an attractive space to enjoy pre-dinner cocktails or after-dinner coffee and liqueurs. Softly cushioned seating is arranged around three sides of a cosy nook, complete with a black terrazzo floor.

Garden, Pool, and Chill-out Areas

The entrance to the Zen-inspired property leads guests past an ornamental pond into a walled garden dominated by a 23-metre swimming pool, which is bordered by flat lawns punctuated with palms and frangipani trees. The spectacular pool extends the length of the garden and features a wide, deep channel for swimming laps, in addition to stepped levels that allow guests to sit, lounge or lie in the water without actually having to swim. Four poolside cabanas – actually modern translations of traditional Balinese ‘bale’ relaxation pavilions – appear to float upon the surface of the water. Each bale is fitted with a yielding mattress and sheltered from the sun by white roller blinds and a white Sunbrella canopy. Located in the centre, with two bales on either side, is a large bubbling, open-air Jacuzzi. Indeed, the theme of The Aqua is total relaxation, and everything has been designed around the comfort of the guests. Another restful seating area can be found at one end of the pool, where an external staircase leads to the sunny rooftop level.

Barbecue

A black terrazzo outdoor buffet table complete with barbecue grill, offers a facility for alfresco party dining.

Steam Room

The large walk-in steam room is located in one corner of the garden. Big enough to accommodate four people, it features a frosted glass door, bench seating, a non-slip white granite floor, and creamy-white Palimanan stone walls extending into a arched ceiling.

Party Room

Accessed from the garden via solid sliding wood doors, the soundproofed party room is ultra private, spacious, windowless and cool. The air-conditioned room is equipped with ceiling fans and a wall-mounted, 39-inch, LCD flat screen satellite TV, together with a DVD player and a quality sound system with surround sound speakers positioned on the ceiling. It is furnished with large upholstered sofas and corner units, a coffee table and built-in shelving. A black terrazzo and teakwood bar is positioned at one end, adjacent to a guest washroom. Mirrored detailing adorns the white walls, lights are recessed into the ceiling, and there is plenty of floor space for dancing. With no fear of disturbing the neighbors, this room presents a wonderful party facility and can comfortably accommodate 20-30 guests.

Kitchen

The modern and compact, fully-equipped kitchen is located out of sight at the rear of the property, yet close to the dining pavilion for ease of service. It contains all of the facilities that the staff require for the preparation of delicious meals, innovative buffets, and party snacks.

Bedrooms

Each of the four air-conditioned bedrooms is accessed by floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, and each is furnished with a queen-size bed and built-in bedside cabinets, funky lamps, white wardrobes and drawers. Two of the bedrooms are located on ground level and two are located on the rooftop level. Embracing fresh white walls, cool creamy-white terrazzo floors, soft grey and white furnishings, and an abundance of space and natural light, the urban chic decor is a study in progressive minimalism. Each bedroom is linked to its own spacious bathroom, fitted with a large terrazzo soaking tub, twin washbasins, and a glass frosted cubicle housing a toilet and an indoor rainshower. Additionally, three of the bedrooms incorporate an open-air, garden rainshower; each shower is centrally positioned between the bedroom and the bathroom and is accessed on either side by clear glass doors. Each bedroom is equipped with a safe deposit box, a Bose iPod sound dock, and ceiling fans in addition to the hidden air-conditioning units. There is a satellite TV connection in three of the bedrooms, and a TV can be provided upon request.

Rooftop terrace and sundeck

On the rooftop level, fringed by pink flowering bougainvillea, a large open-air terrace is fitted with a huge 2 x 4-meter daybed, which is sheltered by a pergola dripping in red passionflowers. An open-air walkway winds around this upper level, girded by a glass wall and backed in places by banded wooden screens, with daybeds located at various intervals. A sunny timber deck, with a shallow ornamental pond on three sides, presents a great place for sunbathing with the provision of four large sun-mattresses. In this peaceful, elevated spot, guests will feel on top of the world.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

All three of the bedrooms are located poolside, and each is complemented by a private en-suite bathroom. Two of the bedrooms form part of the main building, and the third bedroom rests within its own self-contained pavilion. Each bedroom is accessed from the garden via sliding glass doors, and each features a cool tiled floor, discreet ceiling lights, air-conditioning and the additional provision of a ceiling fan. Contemporary furnishings in each room include custom built king-size beds, bedside tables and lamps, floor to ceiling curtains, full length mirrors, desks and comfy chairs. In two of the bedrooms, a dressing area is located behind the bed and completed by a wall of fitted wardrobes, shelves and drawers, fashioned in stylish dark wood. The third bedroom is also well equipped with a wardrobe and storage space.

Adjacent bathrooms follow a chic black and white theme, and are accessed from the bedrooms via sliding glass doors. Each is fitted with a bathtub, a black marble vanity unit and white ceramic washbasins. Two of the bathrooms present twin washbasins. Toilets and rain showers are hidden separately behind private doors within each bathroom, and are fitted with extractor fans. One of bathrooms boasts a rain shower that is open to the sky; it is encompassed by fluted grey granite walls and a matching non-slip floor, and is fitted with a fly screen overhead for the comfort of the guests. The other two bathrooms feature indoor rain showers positioned within spacious cubicles attractively finished with mosaic tiled splash backs.

Open-air Living Space

The open-air living space is located poolside under an innovative bamboo roof, which lets in the light while shading guests from the sun. This is a delightful place to relax and socialize on deeply cushioned sofas and ottomans.

Pool, Sundeck and Bale

The 12 x 3 meter lap pool runs the length of the walled garden, and is directly accessed from each of the bedrooms and living areas. The pool is 1.6 meters deep throughout, and is flanked by an ironwood sundeck at one end, furnished with three sun beds. No chemicals are used in the pool; instead it employs an advanced ionizer filter system that is soft on the earth and gentle on the skin. A romantic wooden bale is tucked away in a private corner; this open-sided relaxation pavilion is characterized by a raised floor furnished with a large mattress and cushions under a thatched roof. It is fitted with an electric fan, lights and music speakers. This is another lovely spot for chilling out with a book, or enjoying an afternoon cocktail.

Living & Dining Room

The semi open-air living and dining room is cooled by natural breezes and ceiling fans. The living area is tastefully furnished with comfortable sofas, ottomans, floor rugs, and modern white storage units. It is equipped with a 39-inch, LCD, flat screen, satellite TV, together with a DVD/CD player and quality sound speakers. Resting in pride of place is the villa’s namesake, a 19th century carved marble angel from Timor.

A guest washroom is situated off the living room.

The dining area overlooks the swimming pool, and is furnished with a large rustic table with a glass top, flanked by eight comfortable cushioned dining chairs.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a dream in black and white, with mosaic tiles, a marble worktop, a large cooker and a hob. There is also a ceiling fan. Fully equipped with microwave, juicer, electrical gadgets and utensils, the kitchen provides everything that the staff needs in order to prepare delicious meals. It is actually two kitchens in one, boasting a wet and a dry area. The provision of a separate staff entrance ensures that guests’ privacy is never disturbed. The staff also uses a separate and discreet route around the back of the property. The staff quarters are out of sight and include a laundry and a generator.

Villa Alamanda, situated ten minutes east of the cultural town of Ubud, is approached through the traditional Balinese woodcarvers’ village of Tengkulak. Perched high on a ridge above the Petanu River, with uninterrupted views over the forest canopy, the graceful architecture of this thatched hideaway blends contemporary elegance with ethnic charm. The property is built on the side of a hill; the living area and bedrooms are all on the same level with steps leading down into the garden. A large gate opens onto a paved parking area, where indigenous ‘serai’ stone walls are complemented by timeworn statues. These jovial characters greet the guests as they step into the cool interior of the villa through a set of antique double doors. Inside, the hallway extends towards a T-shaped wooden terrace. Furnished with antiques, this breezy open-air living area runs the length of the house and boasts a delightful dining section that juts out over the tranquil gardens as they tumble into the steep ravine. The back garden is laid out with the overhanging frangipani and three mulberry root loungers to provide a gracious resting area.

The lower garden, complete with the swimming pool, provides the perfect spot for relaxation. This area is equipped with a large bale with plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the afternoons in luxurious style. The garden is large enough for family games such as badminton. At night, the house, gardens, soaring forest and pool areas are lit up by a festival of lights, presenting guests with a dramatic sense of serenity.

The main 2-storey building houses three of the bedrooms and is characterized by a colonnaded wrap-around Terrace and a corresponding wide wrap-around balcony on the upper floor. The terrace is furnished with a large circular table and six chairs for alfresco dining under a funky metal chandelier. There is also a bar with a curved façade, and a cushioned rattan sofa and chairs together with a glass-topped rattan table.

Living, Dining, & Office Area
Indoors is a large Living, Dining & Office Area, with a cool terrazzo floor scattered with Oriental rugs. Here, guests can enjoy a more formal dining experience around a solid chunky dining table for ten. The office area is furnished with a daybed, shelf units and a desk, and is equipped with a computer, Internet access, a fax machine, and a central telephone system. A guest powder room is accessed from this area.

Service Kitchen
The adjacent Service Kitchen is one of two kitchens at the villa. This one is set up so that the staff can serve food quickly and efficiently at dinner parties and functions, it is fully equipped and well-stocked with quality glassware, crockery and cutlery; a large refrigerator is hidden within a custom-designed cupboard

TV Room
The open-plan TV Room boasts a satellite TV and DVD player, two substantially-sized yielding sofas, a large square coffee table, a lazy chair and a pair of carved side tables positioned upon a warm parquet floor under a soaring pitched roof. This cosy, relaxing area is tastefully enhanced with local artifacts and mirrors.

Master Bedroom
The air-conditioned Master Bedroom is located downstairs and is dominated by a king size four-poster bed resting upon a parquet floor. The beautiful customized furniture includes a large daybed, wardrobe and cupboards; there is also a TV and DVD player and a safety deposit box, and local artwork adorns one wall. The adjoining cream terrazzo bathroom features ‘his & hers’ washbasins, coffee-colored mosaic tiles, a shower positioned within a spacious glass cubicle, and a toilet. A sliding door leads from the bedroom directly onto the verandah.

Main Kitchen
The Main Kitchen is a chef’s dream in black, white and chrome. Immaculate and professionally equipped, it features black marble surfaces and white cabinets, with adjacent store rooms. There is a small garden and terrace at the back of the property beside the kitchen, which is home to a gorgeous statue of the Hindu god, ‘Ganesha’. The villa is also equipped with a generator.

Second Bedroom
A terrazzo staircase leads up to the air-conditioned Second Bedroom, featuring a parquet floor and furnished with a queen size divan bed complete with a mosquito net. There is also a daybed that can be set up as an extra bed, a custom-made side table, and a safety deposit box. A wardrobe offers ample storage space, and a TV and DVD player is provided for the entertainment of the guests. Colorful antique window shutters are mounted on the wall to provide an unusual and attractive decorative feature. The en-suite bathroom boasts a ‘Batu Yogya’ stone floor, a stone-tiled vanity unit, porcelain washbasin, glass shower cubicle, and toilet.

Children’s Bedroom
Across the landing – which opens onto a small ‘Romeo & Juliet’ balcony – is the air-conditioned Children’s Bedroom, furnished with four single beds draped with mosquito nets. The room features a wooden parquet floor, and is equipped with a TV and DVD player, safety deposit box, wardrobes and plenty of storage space. The en-suite bathroom houses a glass shower cubicle, a washbasin and toilet.

Balcony
Sliding doors from both bedrooms open onto the wide wrap around balcony, composed of richly grained, creamy ‘Batu Yogya’ stone. This cool breezy balcony is enhanced with two built-in daybeds, a set of antique Asian urns, and a statue of a Hindu goddess. This is a great spot for relaxing with an afternoon cocktail while enjoying the pleasant view over the garden and pool area.

Guest House
The guest house is a separate single-storey building comprised of two interconnecting air-conditioned guest bedrooms. Each bedroom is characterized by fresh white walls under a soaring thatched roof. Each is furnished with a king size, canopied, four-poster bed created from ornately carved antique wood, together with bedside cabinets, lamps, lazy chairs, table, and dressing area with fitted cupboards, safety deposit box, and full length mirror. Sliding doors open onto the pool deck. Each bedroom is complemented by its own private en-suite bathroom, and each bathroom boasts a stylish dark grey décor with a polished concrete vanity unit and mosaic tiles, ‘his & hers’ sunken washbasins, toilet, and powerful shower. The bedrooms are linked by a cosy sitting room furnished with a comfy, deeply cushioned sofa, standard lamps and a low sideboard.

Garden, Swimming Pool, and Relaxation Pavilions
The villa is positioned around two sides of the large 17 x 6.5 metre lap pool, which is tiled with green Java stone and complemented by a serene Buddha statue and an outdoor rain-shower. Privacy and security is maintained by an encompassing garden wall. At one end of the pool is a relaxation pavilion, known as a ‘bale bengong’. Furnished with cushions, it is great for chilling out with a book or taking an afternoon nap. A small, 2-storey, rectangular, wooden gazebo, charmingly fashioned in the form of a traditional rice barn – known as a ‘lumbung’ or ‘jineng’ – with a thatched, horseshoe-shaped roof, rests in another part of the garden. It features a lower platform and a staircase leading up to a private, upper room accessed by a Lombok door. This is a fun playhouse for children.

Water plays a central and important role in the agriculturally based culture of Bali and is reflected here. Paths of white stone cross many water features, descending stairs, past small fountains with the relaxing sound of water in motion to lulling the senses throughout the villa. Walls with carved stone panels demonstrate the artistic caliber of Bali’s artists, and further enhance the villa’s local continuity. The owner is a serious collector of Asian antiquities, and pieces from his collection, some of museum quality, are to be seen throughout the villa.

All the air-conditioned bedrooms are luxuriously decorated with antiques and contain queen-sized teak beds with mosquito net canopies. Guests enjoy luxuriant and abundant privacy.
Each room has TV, video-player and stereo. Safes are also provided. The master bedroom features a walk-through closet and a large bathroom, including an oversize bathtub with a private deck and panoramic views of the surrounding environment to the pool and river.

Further back on the property are the two guest bedrooms. Adjoining each room is a large ensuite Bali-style bathroom with an outdoor shower and bathtub set in a private miniature garden.
At the center of the property, the open-air living room with two-tiered roof is furnished with immaculate, white cushioned sofas and several antiques. This carefully crafted and decorated room is the nexus of the property, and is an excellent place for entertaining and relaxing.

Leading off from the living room is a fully enclosed study, surrounded by a small pond, providing an air-conditioned sanctuary. The dark wood shelves on its walls hold an impressive collection of books, satellite television, and an extensive video and music library.
The infinity-style swimming pool is surrounded by a deck with lounge chairs and offers views of the rice paddies on the other side of the river. Nearby and sharing the same view is a bale (Balinese gazebo) furnished with overstuffed cushions, providing an ideal location for daytime massages. From the entrance pavilion a walkway leads through a lush garden to the central courtyard. Here is the access to main pavilion from where you can experience your first stunning views over the valley.
In this long-house style pavilion the open dining space is accommodated, together with 2 spacious bedrooms. In between the entrance from the gallery to the bedrooms is a private comfortable sitting area located.

Each bedroom has a king size bed, a separate dressing area, a bathroom with an attached open outdoor patio with a freestanding bathtub and shower. Via the dining area, walking over stepping-stones of the main focus fishpond, one reaches the large living pavilion, where the kitchen and the staff quarters are housed. While traditional Balinese and Javanese materials are used throughout, the pavilions with the thatched roofs appear to be modern, so is most of the furniture.

All decorative and art works have been collected by the owner during trips all over Asia. The lighting in the pavilions and gardens create another serene atmosphere during the evenings.

Living Room

Welcoming guests with its generous size and openness, the Living Room offers a sweeping vista of the pool, gardens and adjacent rice fields. Cooled by ceiling fans and natural ventilation, and characterized by an Indian slate floor and a soaring vaulted ceiling, the room is exquisitely furnished with cream leather sofas, chairs and bar stools. The centerpiece is an impressive iron chandelier designed by the owners. There is a polished granite party bar with fridge and sink, and a round table with chairs for intimate dining.

Dining Room

A stairway leads down to the Dining Room, located on ground level next to the pool terrace. The room is furnished with a three meter long table which seats ten, a sideboard and a pair of 24-light standing candelabra. The ceiling features cove lighting and specialty lighting for the stunning art works which adorn the walls. Folding glass doors offer guests cool alfresco dining and the ambiance is enhanced by water sounds emanating from adjacent ornamental ponds, water spouts and bubbling urns.

There is a Powder Room at the foot of the stairs.

Service Kitchen

A timber bridge traverses a pond between the Dining Room and the immaculate Service Kitchen. It is fully equipped with everything that the chef needs to prepare delicious meals in accordance with the requests of each guest. A Wet Kitchen and a Laundry are both tucked away at the back, along with the staff entrance.

Media Room

The air-conditioned Media Room is equipped with a 32-inch LCD flat screen TV, VCD player and surround sound system. It is entered via folding doors leading from the Dining Room. This comfortable room is furnished with two deeply-cushioned sofas, traditional batik cushions, a games table with Plexiglas chairs, and an innovative glass topped coffee table created by hand from coffee-wood branches. Sliding windows on one side overlook an ornamental pond and a window on the other side looks out at the pool. Books and artifacts fill the bookcases.

Master Suite

The Master Suite is accessed by an elevated covered walkway on the Living Room level, bridging a water garden below. A sliding door opens to reveal the air-conditioned Office/Sitting Room, complete with merbau wood floor, antique desk, chairs and original artwork on the walls.

The Master Bedroom is entered via another sliding door, where a splendid king-size, canopied bed, dressed in white linens and mosquito netting sits in the center of the room like a throne. It features intricate carving and is a copy of an old Madurese Royal bed. This air-conditioned room is equipped with a TV and VCD player. The walls are decorated in a cool shade of blue. There is a vaulted wood ceiling and folding glass doors that open onto a wide wrap around slate-floored balcony. This allows guests to choose open air sleeping instead of air-conditioning if they wish.

The views from this room and balcony are breathtaking. The balcony is furnished with a cushioned day bed, rattan armchairs and a dining table for a private breakfast or lunch. This is also a wonderful spot for sunset cocktails. The ensuite air-conditioned bathroom is luxurious. It boasts a cream-colored marble floor, an abundance of wall mirrors, an oval-shaped terrazzo bathtub for two and twin marble washbasins. A toilet cubicle and a separate shower are each entered via frosted glass doors. The powerful overhead rain-shower is complemented by a hand-held shower.

There is a large closet and dressing area with built-in wardrobes, drawers and plenty of storage space. A safe deposit box and mini-bar fridge are located in the dressing area.

Guest Suite

The air-conditioned Guest Suite is located on the Ground level. The Sitting Room/Children’s Bedroom is entered through a sliding door leading off a covered walkway beside a beautiful water garden. There is an L-shaped sofa that can be converted into twin beds, making this suite ideal for a family.

The bedroom is entered through a sliding wooden door which separates it from the sitting room, or through doors opening onto the Terrace and Garden. This generous bedroom is furnished with antiques and artwork, an Oriental rug and a king-size, four-poster steel bed. The bed has elaborate white mosquito netting which allows guests to sleep with the folding glass doors open to the rice field views, or to choose the option of air-conditioning.

The Guest Suite is equipped with a safe deposit box and a mini-bar fridge. A beautiful old cabinet holds a TV and VCD player. The dressing area and ensuite bathroom follow the same layout and have the same amenities as the Master Suite. The wide wrap around white Palimanan stone terrace is furnished with an antique carved Timorese table and chairs for private dining, or just relaxing and viewing the rice fields.

Guest House

The free standing Guest House is located on the far side of the living and dining pavilion on ground level. It can be reached from the Dining Room or by an outdoor staircase which leads from the Living Room. It is air-conditioned and features a soaring ceiling and a Merbau wood floor. The furnishings include a queen size, four-poster bed fashioned from carved teak, with exquisite white linens and mosquito netting; an antique cabinet housing a TV and VCD player with surround sound; a writing table and chairs.

The air-conditioned bathroom has a marble floor and a dressing area with fitted wardrobes, huge mirrors, and louvered doors which hide a safe deposit box and mini bar fridge. Double marble topped vanity units support large glass washbowls with teak cupboards and shelves underneath. The toilet cubicle and separate shower are each located behind frosted glass doors. The powerful rain-shower is complemented by a hand held shower. Glass doors lead to an open air bathroom romantically lit by unique wall lamps. An oversize bathtub is sheltered under the roof eaves, and there is an outdoor rain-shower for moonlit bathing.

A glass wall of sliding doors opens onto a white Palimanan stone terrace. There is a marble topped iron table and chairs for private dining with garden and pool views. The terrace is sheltered by a pergola supporting a cascade of white thumbergia flowers.

Gardens, Swimming Pool, and Relaxation Pavilion

The 16 x 3 meter, blue slate tiled swimming pool has a waterfall at one end, two infinity edges, and is anchored by a Pendopo, used as a Relaxation Pavilion. This ancient structure is the core of a 150-year old wooden Joglo house from Java. It showcases ornate hand-carvings and robust columns, and was constructed using traditional tongue and groove techniques without the use of any nails or bolts. Furnished with a rustic table, a deeply cushioned rattan sofa and chairs, this raised pavilion, with its antique terracotta tiled floor is another delightful area for dining, entertaining and relaxing. The white Palimanan stone pool terrace is shaded by sweet-scented white frangipani trees; there are 4 sunbeds and two umbrellas.

Water is a predominant element in the spiritual landscape of Bali. This is reflected throughout the property, but especially in the enchanting water garden between the bedroom pavilion and the Living/Dining pavilion. The pond features white lotus and bulrushes, and is planted with white orchids and a frangipani tree on an island. Two serene Buddha statues sit in stone caves against a backdrop of flowing water to complete this beautiful water feature.
